Q:
By Alabama Law, we are required as locksmiths to verify ownership of any vehicle or house entry. You will be asked to provide proof of ownership or proof of residence upon our arrival and before we provide any service. Sometimes your "Proof" may be locked inside and you have no way to provide us with that information until after the service is provided. When this is the case, we will provide the service and if proper proof is not produced, the authorities, which cover your area of service, will be called.
Q:
There are many possible answers to this question but I will cover the main ones. Sometimes, it is as simple as the batterery in your Remote or Fob is dead. Some are very easy to change and others are a real pain. Make sure you know the proper way to install your battery before you do it yourself. Next, the Battery in your Vehicle may be dead. I have seen this happen as well. The Remote or Fob must have communication with the vehecle in order to work. Lastly, your Remote or Fob may be broken. It does happen... Dropped keys, age, corrosion from bad batteries, water and many other similar issues will will absolutely destroy your Remote or Fob.
Sometimes it may be an absolute must to change out your worn and wore out locks. If your locks are in good shape you have other options. Re-keying is a process we can use to change your locks to use a different key. Based on the locks you have, we may be able to re-key all of them to use the same key.
Over the years, you may have added new locks and you have ended up having multiple keys for your house and want to have only one for your conveinence As long as all the locks are of the same type, we should be able to key them all to match the same key.
One way to tell for certain if your locks can be Re-keyed to match one key...
Insert the existing key into all the locks you have. If your key goes into the lock (it doesn't have to turn it) then there is a good chance all can be re-keyed to match. If the key doesn't go into the lock, there is a good chance it may be made by a different manufacturer and it uses a different style key and keyway, and can not be keyed the same.
Q:
First, if you are keeping some locks and replacing others, make sure the new locks use the same key type as the ones you are keeping. An example of this would be... If you have Kwikset Locks which you are keeping, your new locks should be Kwikset and not Schlage... These locks do not use the same keyway and therefore can not be keyed to match the same key.
If you are buying multiple locks from a "Big Box Store", there will be a Key Code somewhere on the box that indicates the key cuts for that lock set. Make sure to match this code on all your locks and you will have one key which fits them all. We commonly refer to these locks as "KA" (Keyed Alike)
Your home is the place where you protect your most valuable assets. It may be what you own, but it also your children and
Q:
Short answer is YES you can. Long answer all depends on your particular vehicle. In most cases the Ignition Lock Cylinder of your vehicle can be re-wafered to match the existing key you have. If this process is done correctly, your original key will still work both the door and the ignition. If your key has a transponder chip inside, then there should be no reason for reprogramming the chip as it already matches your vehicle.
In some cases, let say a theft recovery, it may be beneficial to have the ignition lock cylinder changed so it will use a different key than the original. Most door locks, trunk locks, and glove box locks can be rewafered to match the new key. In this case, if the key has a chip inside, we would suggest having all original keys removed from the system and then the new key/keys added. The new keys will be the only keys programmed to start your vehicle.

Q:
Yes, in most cases there are options in replacing your old style locking mechanism with a new style to fit your needs. There are many different access controls systems that are available on the market today. Some regulations, like Fire Codes, may limit what you have to choose from and what route we would suggest that you take. Give us a call and we can discuss what options you have.
Q:
Yes. If you want other people to have access to your front door, as you would in most businesses for your employees, but you would like your office to be only accessed by you, we would suggest master keying the front door lock. As the controller, your key would function on both locks. A different key would be given to any other person which would need to gain entry through the front door. Their key would fit into the office door lock but it would not have the proper cuts to function and open the lock.
